刚刚出狱的Alex（阿伦•瑞克曼 饰）本想独自一人到加拿大去，离婚随后他在餐厅里遇到了少女Vivienne（艾蜜莉•汉普雪儿 饰），离婚她想坐Alex的顺风车回到母亲居住的小镇。性格活泼的Vivienne跟Alex形成了鲜明对比，两人一路上也有说有笑，怎料途中他们的车被一辆卡车撞上，Vivienne当场死亡。十分内疚的Alex带着Vivienne准备要送给母亲的礼物来到了小镇，他发现Vivienne的母亲Linda（西格妮•韦弗 饰）行为古怪，原来她患有自闭症。接下来的日子里，Alex留在了Linda的家中，帮忙Linda料理生活上的事与安排Vivienne的葬礼。此间，邻居Maggie（凯瑞-安•莫斯 饰）对Alex产生了好感，更从当地警察的口中得知了Alex的背景。另一方面，Alex在与Linda的相处中，对自己的过去渐渐释怀。
