地主刘大爷的儿子刘大痴又傻又哑，高卢不慎落水里被佃户林大雄所救。霸道苛刻的刘大爷准备赏大雄一块银元了事，高卢其继室却看中了大雄的健壮英俊，定要大雄在家中做长工。大雄与佃户庄老爹的女儿小娟相爱，小娟之兄大牛与刘家管家胡二爷之子小胡有过磨擦，胡二爷因此怀恨在心。胡二爷欲捉大牛去做修城的民夫，大牛闻信逃走，庄老爹却被抓进庄中地牢。小娟去求刘大爷，杨氏发现了大雄与小娟的恋情，便让刘大爷将小娟嫁给大痴。大雄此时亦被小胡诬陷为闹事者，为救大雄，小娟只得答应嫁给大痴……
