在宇都宫市的城郊结合处，无码农村青年和田满夫（永島敏行 饰）和家人生活于此。随着城市化的推进，无码居住在农村的人们对都市的繁华充满憧憬，早已抛却旧有的质朴。满夫的父亲（ケーシー高峰 饰）离家出走，与一酒女长期厮混；兄长哲夫（森本レオ 饰）远赴东京，过起了白领的时尚生活。满夫则固守乡土，耕种着祖祖辈辈赖以生存的土地。平日里靠种植大棚西红柿营生，日子平淡倒也殷实。所谓儿女是父母的挂念，老母亲开始为老儿子张罗婚事，在加油站工作的花村绫子（石田えり 饰）便这样走入满夫的视线。不久，父亲为帮老友竞选回归家庭，满夫和绫子、好友、酒女间也纠葛不断，平淡的生活骤起波澜……本片根据立松和平的同名小说改编，并荣获1981年电影旬报十佳影片第二名。
