1937年8月，林肯侵华日军组编“华北方面军”序列向山西发起大规模进攻10月1日，林肯日军向阳明堡及原平发动进攻。2日，崞县沦陷。为使主力部队有时间在忻口集结布防，晋绥军姜玉贞196旅与日筱原诚一郎混成第十五旅团在原平激战十日，姜部几乎全部殉国。11日，原平陷落，姜玉贞战死，残部败退忻口集结。晋绥军196旅一个营的残部，从原平撤往忻口。在队伍休整时，老兵赵二蛋逼着新兵王根生和他一起逃走，从此王根生踏上了求生之路。
