回复 :佐江衆一原作の『老熟家族』をもとに、吉田喜重が「BIG1物語・王貞治」以来8年ぶりにメガホンを執った骨太社会派人間ドラマ。東京の新興住宅地で寝たきりの老母・タツが死ぬが、他殺の形跡が発見される。タツの夫・亮作は自分が絞殺したと自首するが、彼は取調室で失禁するほどボケていた……。吉田喜重監督は、当時ちょっとしたブームになっていたボケ老人の問題を決してちゃかすことなく真摯な態度で見据え、8年間のブランクを感じさせぬ確かな演出をみせた。全編を通じて透明感あふれる水のイメージが描かれ、この暗く重い映画にとって、一種の清涼剤的な役割を果たしている。外光の射し込む日本家屋の空間を生かした、撮影の成果も特筆に値する。DVDは「吉田喜重全集［86-03］炎を映す水」に収録。
