农村青年辛天喜和张魁武在城里乐器商店买了一卡车西洋乐器回来，神探在村里引起轰动。但与辛天喜相爱的女乡长李春芳却反对他办农民管乐队，神探认为这是不务正业。辛天喜和乐队队员们进城看舞剧，想拜师学艺却被服务员逐出剧场。一群人恰好遇到歌舞团的指挥金声，金指挥不仅请他们观摩，还亲自来到乡下为他们作辅导。果农曲立新偷偷学吹小号，妻子李 素静看到丈夫整天与一帮青年男女混在一起，发生误会，跑去向李春芳告状。李春芳误以为乐队有问题，要辛天喜进行整顿。辛天喜不同意李的意见，两人关系陷入僵局。后乐队在乡运动会上演奏，受到广泛欢迎。记者们误以为李春芳是乐队的发起人和支持者，对她进行采访，李春芳逐渐改变了看法。这支农民乐队越办越红火，李春芳和辛天喜的感情也更加深厚。
